An Evening With: Henry Rollins

I can't feel my ass. I have been sitting in the same chair for well over 3 hours. My legs are at this point completely numb and if I don't find the restroom in the next four minutes I might just pee in my pants.

I knew exactly what I was getting myself into and wouldn't have it any other way. I have seen Henry's spoken word before and couldn't have been more entertained. The self proclaimed "curmudgeon" was celebrating his big 5-0 in Los Angeles with a string of his famous "Talking Tour" dates.

The show was held at Largo (at the Coronet) an old L.A. venue that is peculiarly anal and covert about their ticket sales and "rules". First off you cannot but tickets online. You have to call their box office which is seemingly hardly ever open....not that it matters because THEN you have to leave a message in the specific way they request & the'll get back to ya...days later. Your voicemail from them IS your ticket, so better not delete it!

Ok your all paid up and on the list. Now-No cell phones, no cameras and DO NOT be late they will lock you out. My first instinct is to roll my eyes at all the hoops you have to jump through but who am I kidding , I'm compulsively on time if not early sooo....

Largo - I like your styyyyyle

My friend Shannon and I arrived at the venue, parked and headed across the street to the aptly named "Sushi on La Cienega" That is exactly what we were doing: eating sushi on La Cienaga. I don't think creativity is a strong suit for the owners. In case the cryptic name threw you off, its also right next door to this place:

Food consumed. Large Asahi's put away we head back to the venue and take our seats. Lights go down and we are briefed, again by a high strung employee on the "rules". The music is cut off and Mr. Rollins takes the stage. He's about 90% grey, small and compact yet at 50, still muscular and if nothing else overflowing with energy. This was the 5th and last of his L.A. dates in a row but you would have thought it was his first.

He has the stamina of a crackhead, the humor of a standup and the insightful current affair knowledge of a CNN correspondent... and he is PUMPED to tell you about everything on his mind, even if it does take 3 hours. Because we the audience feared certain death if we touched our cellphones I have no photos or audio. Instead, ill give you a quick rundown of the topics covered.

-Egypt (obviously)
-The union protests in Wisconsin
-The importance of travel and the direct connection between travel, peace & tolerance.
-Girl looses eye at Black Flag show after not moving out of the way of a 200+lb. stage diver
-Nicely making fun of North Korea & their overinflated visions of their accomplishments
-Reciting Bush's book  Decision Points in the "Bush voice" in Costco
-His admiration for Tranny Prostitutes

...and MANY more, its difficult to remember it all, there is SO much information being hurled at you. Just so you get a better idea of how the shows play out this is a clip of an older show..one of my favorites.

This old picture is amazing and hilarious and I COULD NOT leave it out . Your welcome.

It was no surprise that the show was fantastic. Inspirational, entertaining, thoughtful and engaging. I think I speak for everyone by saying we would have happily sat for 3 more hours. After the show he graciously took photos with people and could not have been more polite and generous. He truly is a class act an I look forward to the next.

OH, and he never took a drink of water , in 3 hours. There wasn't even water on stage... don't know why I find that fascinating.

Old Habits ...& Songs Die Hard

DISCLAIMER: THIS BLOG ENTRY HAS NO REAL PURPOSE OR RELEVANCE

This is a list of (to narrow it down) songs that my Ipod is currently having a love affair with and I gotta say; that's fine by me. They are in no way current or relevant.... other than just being beyond awesome.

It takes me a loooong time to warm up to new music. Even the bands I love most were not love at first listen. I tend to buy albums in pieces and fall in love song by song by song. It's a process.

This is a chance to write down what the ticker tape in my brain reads when the Ipod turns on.

Danzig- Am I Demon
Danzig

Its everything I look for in a Danzig song. Just heavy enough, just melodic enough. Crisp and concise, short and to the point. Somehow he gets away with being a total badass yet SINGING. No like really singing, with vibrato and everything. Beats me, but I love it.

The Black Keys- Psychotic Girl
Attack & Release

This song makes me want to wonder the streets of New Orleans alone at night with a bottle of bourbon. This band has some serious soul and this song shows off every bit of it. **Also excellent use of what is surely Wyatt Earp's out of tune saloon piano**

Queens of the Stone Age - Avon
Queens of the Stone Age

With not so subtle hints of an impending tour. I think I have QOTSA on the brain. A track from their self titled album, this song seriously does it for me. Classic lazy and lethargic singing from Josh Homme, great key changes and a melody that makes you wish you wrote the damn thing.

Mondo Cane- Lontano Lontano
Mondo Cane

This song, this album holds a special place it my heart. OK actually it's not on the album. It's additional songs from a live performance. Either way, to call this song beautiful is a tragic understatement. It reads like a lullaby and although the content of the lyrics is that of love lost you will want to make it your wedding song ( just me?) I could do a list on this genre alone... I'll leave that for another time.

Mr. Bungle- Vanity Fair
California

If I were a Stripper Burlesque dancer, I would shake it out to this song. Its sexy. ( Just to be clear, I'm not  a "dancer" of any kind)

Kyuss- Gloria Lewis
And The Circus Leaves Town

.....and if I, for some unseen reason were to dance to a second song, this would be it. Kyuss is on my "Please God, Reunite" list. Mostly a revolving door of musicians its core consisted of (for some time) Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri of QOTSA. Its gritty, sludgy and has that fantastic low budget sound.....not to mention John Garcia is a highly underrated singer.

Faith No More- Mouth To Mouth
Album of the Year

OK I feel the need to proclaim that this band holds my #1 spot, always has, always will.
Now, I have never loved AND hated a song so much. At first listen I remember thinking "SHIT YEA!" A solid Bungle nod! Weird sound! Weird Instruments! Weird time signatures! Perfect!
Then came the chorus .... Patton fans hear me out... The chorus is vanilla and generic like a bad White Zombie song!(they exist) Boring chords? That is not the FMN I know! None the less the verses are enough to carry the chorus and this song remains, oddly enough, one of my favorites. ( It's a love/hate relationship)

Ya Ya Ya ....you can crucify me now. Ready? Go!

Eco Travel for the Part Time Environmentalist

I have been thinking about writing something like this for some time now and mostly I'm doing it for my own personal interest in the subject.  The word "eco" is gaining a lot of momentum in recent years and sometimes holds the stigma of being a "lifestyle". Some may think if you have any interest in eco-anything you are presumably a tree hugger who bikes to work and doesn't own a television and has a strange affinity for granola.

I mean, I'm not by any means the asshole who dumps my empty Taco Bell bag in the parking lot when I'm done ...but, I'll be the first to admit, I occasionally buy the big flat of water bottles, I don't enjoy backpacking, I don't own a Prius and more often than not I forget to bring my reusable bag to Trader Joe's...actually, my Trader Joe's bags are currently holding my Christmas wrapping paper :/

That being said, most of us probably fall somewhere in the middle. We want to help but ....ya, uhh we'll start tomorrow. We swear! We can all agree on one thing, we all love traveling and we all love vacations and at some point we all will take them. I have seen some really beautiful places as I'm sure a lot of you have, and can appreciate a hotel, business, city or country that takes pride in preserving it's treasures and handles it's tourism as responsibly as possible.

I guess I  just figure, if your going to travel anyway why not stay somewhere that's a little more eco friendly than the place right next door to it. Support the guys who are getting it right!

I've compiled a list of some popular (and some maybe not so popular , but beautiful) destinations hotels and resorts that deserve you dollar.

Destination: Honduras

It's hard to forget being on a boat off the coast of Roatan Island watching the sun come up over the hillside, not a soul in sight and a pod of dolphin swimming next to you. It's hard to choose just one amazing thing about this place. The food, the people, the water, the reef, the sun? Don't bother trying it's just not possible.

We headed out of LAX to San Salvador, El Salvador for a quick layover that proved to be fruitful when we discovered the dirt cheap smokes (bonus)! From there we landed in Roatan. Flying over the reef was a perfect preview of things to come. We arrived to perfect weather and sun. You step off the plane to that oh so familiar smell of ocean breeze and something .... what I don't know... just that smell of Central America and that distinct dampness that you come to love. Of course in Jeans and a black tee you start to think about that damp humidity more than anything else

Passport sufficiently stamped(for now) we headed over to Infinity Bay in West Bay. We rented from a condo owner via VRBO.com She was more helpful and insightful. We were excited to have a kitchen, fridge and basically a temporary home. Infinity is also the "greenest" place at this time on Roatan. Their septic systems put zero pollutants in the ocean. The 1st Roatan resort with 100% potable tap water and purified ice makers. The hot water heaters are also solar heated. The property is not only beautiful but responsible....... and whats right beyond it is something that words don't quite capture. Water that looks like a damn screen saver. You know what annoying one that you stare at all day saying " one day, screw this job...one day" I found myself thinking, I found it! The reef ( second to only the Great Barrier Reef in Australia) creates a contrast of blues that you didn't even realize existed

All along the bay and behind the property is an array of restaurants and grocery stores that provided everything you could need. On our first full day we decided hit up Mangiamos for groceries then off to eat breakfast at Celeste's, a small outdoor restaurant and hotel... they had a some extra "help" on hand... and  by help i mean food thieving parrots. Birds! My favorite! If you know me at all you have heard me state numerous times that I firmly believe monkeys and birds are surely direct decedents of the devil. They are just too smart ya know? Like I can see them thinking evil shit. Anyway, I digress.

In an effort to spare you any redundancy the next few days were spend doing this:

In case that wasn't clear enough, days were filled with sun, drinks, and lounging with not a care in the world and a full Ipod. However, that's not the only thing to do. The snorkeling is ridiculous, you can get lost for hours scouring the reef for Bone fish Grouper, Parrot fish, Angle fish ...oh and one day Jelly fish, awesome! Luckily they were small and relatively harmless. Kayaking, paddle boarding and diving are all also wise choices.

Take the water taxi ( $3 each way) over to West End, a lively town about 5 min from West Bay. A perfect combo of locals, backpacking divers, great restaurants and fun bars. Number one bar? The Reef Rider. A floating bar/ barge thingy. Best damn place for a drink in West End. Run by the crazy ex-Canadian Captain Perry and bartenders that will make you get "your own damn drink" ask you to bartend and flip you off all in 20 minutes . Fire dancers that accidentally set the palapa on fire and a fitting plank entrance that is great on the way in and a scary exercise in faux-sober balance on the way out. Excellent.

Day 5 we went out fishing. 6 AM start (yikes). Well worth it. At the Reef Rider we met a local fisherman who took us out for the day. I caught my first fish! Hard to believe after dating a fisherman for 6 + years ...eh, better late than never. Fish 1 a ugly Barracuda. Fish 2 a grouper. Andrew quickly trumped me with a MUCH larger one. It was a great day and we kept one for ourselves and gave the rest to the captain and his deckhand to eat/sell whatever. We went home and cooked up our catch. Delicious!

As the trip came to an end it seemed we spent the last day sitting at the Palapa bar staring silently out to the ocean occasionally shaking our heads in disgust that it was already over. This trip has been one of a kind and i cant wait to go back. Leaving Roatan was really difficult and I would tell any friends and family to make it out there! Ill put up a few helpful links up if Honduras is on your horizon.
